Nvidia shows off Tegra 2 Android tablet

Netbook News has come up with this video footage of an Android tablet powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor. The video only shows off footage of Gridiron game BackBreaker, but there are enough details to grab our attention.

The Tegra 2 is a next-generation, ARM Cortex 9 processor, which is a generation ahead of the chipset found inside the Apple iPad.

The prototype on display is said to have 1GB of RAM, a front facing webcam and microphone, a MicroSD slot, 2 USB slots and possibly a slot for loading in a SIM card.

Apollo 11 Launch at 500 Frames per Second

This amazing video by Spacecraft Films shows the July 16, 1969 launch of the Apollo 11 mission that landed the first humans on the moon. The camera was rolling at a whopping 500 frames per second, allowing the first 30 seconds of the launch to be slowed down into this 8-minute narrated video of pure awesomeness.

$200 Chrome OS Tablet by Freescale

So it does exist. I had heard that there was going to be a Chrome OS tablet at the Mobile World Congress, and sure enough we finally see in a somewhat lengthy video the folks from Freescale showing off their prototype with a 7″ screen. This was the same model that was shown at CES running Android. The cost? Around $200, running on hardware in the form factor of their model known as the i.MX51. The video shows some locally cached video playback in HTML5:

We’ve become so accustomed to the ease and convenience of iTunes and blink-and-you-miss-’em CD rips that we forget how in the mid-1990s, ripping a CD was a time-consuming process fraught with peril. Shoot, ripping a single disc to a 128Kbps MP3 could take eight hours on a 200MHz Pentium! Fast forward a decade and faster hardware and better software have made CD ripping so mainstream your mom does it.

Palm Pre unboxing video

I realise that the Palm Pre has been around for a while but it’s taken some effort to get our hands on a review unit as they are in such short supply. This is one that James and I were really looking forward to putting through its paces as we’d heard mostly good things about WebOS.

Having played with the Pre for a while over the weekend I have to say that I am initially quite impressed. The user interface is smooth and intuitive and I like the way email is handled. There’s also mutitasking here so you can have many apps running at once, unlike the iPhone, you don’t have to close one app to go to another!

Watch Jupiter Rotate

What would it be like to coast by Jupiter and watch it rotate? This was just the experience of the New Horizons spacecraft as it approached and flew by Jupiter in 2007. Clicking on the image will bring up a movie of what the robotic spacecraft saw. Visible above in the extensive atmosphere of the Solar System’s largest planet are bands and belts of light and dark clouds, as well as giant rotating storm systems seen as ovals.

A frosty winter weekend offered a perfect chance for DC Metro riders to observe what has become an annual ritual of shedding their pants on the subway. No Pants Day began as a prank by a few riders in 2002 and has developed a following of thousands of people in over 40 cities worldwide.

The Known Universe

What would it look like to travel across the known universe? To help humanity visualize this, the American Museum of Natural History has produced a modern movie featuring many visual highlights of such a trip.

The video starts in Earth’s Himalayan Mountains and then dramatically zooms out, showing the orbits of Earth’s satellites, the Sun, the Solar System, the extent of humanities first radio signals, the Milky Way Galaxy, galaxies nearby, distant galaxies, and quasars. As the distant surface of the microwave background is finally reached, radiation is depicted that was emitted billions of light years away and less than one million years after the Big Bang.

Domestic Espionage Alert: Spy Drone Discovered

KPRC news in Houston recently filmed a secret experiment by law enforcement agencies including the Dept. of Homeland Security of a drone intended to spy on Americans.

The drone uncovered during this investigation are not like the large, expensive models used by the military for targeted strikes on militants half a world away.  These are manufactured by Insitu out of Bingen, Washington (corporate offices located in Australia), only weigh about 40 pounds (18.1 kg) before monitoring equipment is installed. This model has the capacity to stay airborne for up to a day.
