Stop Rupert Murdoch

Posted by – 02/03/2011

Our democracy is at risk. Media-mogul Rupert Murdoch wants to extend his massive political influence by taking over BSkyB and controlling nearly half the British media! We have just 24 hours to press the government to stand up for British media and democracy and stop Rupert Murdoch.

Dear friends across the UK,

In 24 hours, nearly half our mass media could be owned by Rupert Murdoch.

For four decades he has interfered with our democracy — determining election results, bolstering politicians in exchange for influence, and smearing others who refuse his orders. But he may have finally gone too far — with just 24 hours left before the decision, the coalition is still deeply divided on Murdoch’s bid for BSkyB.

It doesn’t matter if the machine you are using is a massive crane or a tiny smartphone: You will always curse in the same way when it crashes. The deafening noise, however, won’t be the same.

The collision in early February of the 60-mile-long B-9B iceberg with the protruding tongue of the Mertz Glacier in East Antarctica is captured here in a series of satellite radar images.

The crash created a second massive iceberg nearly 50 miles long and 25 miles wide, named C-28. The name means that it’s the 28th glacier since 1976 that has broken off from the quadrant of Antarctica that faces Australia.

Even after posting a $1.6 billion first quarter profit, Westpac was a melancholy bank shortly before 4pm today.

“Oh so very over it today,” Westpac announced to the world via its Twitter account.

The sullen tweet spread like wildfire and tugged at heart strings across the social networking site.

“Maybe you can go dive in a swimming pool full of my money to make you feel better,” said one concerned Tweeter in response.

“You’re a bank. You made a $1.6 billion first-quarter profit. Cheer up,” said another.

No Clean Feed

The Australian Federal Government is pushing forward with a plan to force Internet Service Providers [ISPs] to censor the Internet for all Australians. This plan will waste tens of millions of taxpayer dollars and will not make anyone safer.

The filter will do almost nothing to prevent the people who are willfully making, trading, and accessing child sexual abuse material. This type of material is not distributed in the open and we need to fund police to continue to infiltrate and prosecute the groups of people responsible for creating and distributing such material.

As if the Liberals didn’t have enough troubles, swashbuckling copyright pirates intend to contest the next federal election.

It’s not a joke, The Pirate Party is currently seeking 500 members – at $20 a piece – so it can become an officially registered party with the Australian Electoral Commission. The party’s constitution is “still in progress”, but its policies will be built on a “serious platform of intellectual property law reform and protection of privacy rights and freedom of speech”.
